Edmodo is a social networking Web 2.0 tool that offers educators and students a safe and private platform to extend class activities and discussions beyond the school walls. With a simple and easy-to-use interface, both teachers and students can learn to use the features of Edmodo quickly and easily. Some of the features of Edmodo include:
Online Communication and Collaboration: Students can communicate and collaborate with others within their own class in real time -- enabling class discussions and collaboration on issues from class and projects. Enhanced communication means discussions flourish and ideas prosper among students. Teachers can create polls to survey students and to foster interest. Edmodo also allows a student or teacher to send private messages directly to one another. However, no direct student-to-student communication is possible, so the teacher can monitor all students' postings.
Calendar: Teachers can use the calendar to mark down assignments and other notices to each class which students can then access -- from home or anywhere they can log on to Edmodo. As notices are added, they appear in the calendar for each student in that class, helping students to keep current with their work and studies in class.
Manage Assignments: Teachers can create and manage assignments easily. These assignments can include uploaded files, links to other web sites, or a combination of these. A dialog box allows teachers to describe the assignment and to include directions as needed, and a calendar appears for each assignment's due date. Moreover, the teacher is able to assign that task to any or all of his classes. Once assigned, students receive notification of the assignment under their "Spotlight," and as students complete and turn in their assignment, teachers receive a similar notification. Additionally, as students complete and submit assingments, teachers can return a student's grade and include a comment as well.
Library: Teachers can include resources in Edmodo's "Class Library" so that students can refer to these to study and/or complete their work. This reduces copy work and cluttered binders.
Private and Secure: No student email is required to create an account -- only a user name and password. The teacher simply provides any student in class with a class code that the student enters to join that class. Any students who already have an account can join other teachers' classes by receiving their class codes, too. Teachers can easily change a class code to protect the integrity of the class, and an array of features are available for teachers to manage the students in their classes. A teacher can create any number of classes and even small groups of students within classes!
